Two persons were charred to death after their car caught fire following a head-on collision with a lorry. The accident occurred between Joladarashi and Chellagurki, 25 km away from Bellary, on Wednesday.

According to police, the car, coming from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, was heading towards Bellary while the goods-carrying lorry was on its way towards Anantapur.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the car spinned and caught fire. It is suspected that the auto locks of the doors might have got jammed.

On being informed by passersby, the P.D. Halli police rushed to the accident spot.

The Fire and Emergency Services personnel arrived and doused the fire. The deceased have been identified as Manda Obulapathi, a photographer in Atmakur village, and Kumar, owner of a welding shop in Perur village.

The lorry was seized at a checkpost near Vidupankal and arrested Manohar, the driver. Mr. Rudramuni, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Bellary rural), along with Umesh Naik, Police Inspector and Mr. Sandeep, Police Sub-Inspector, visited the spot immediately after the accident. Later, Mr. Pompapati, Regional Transport Officer and doctors from VIMS hospital visited the spot.

The P.D. Halli police have registered a case.

Obulapathi’s wife, Chittemma, with her one-and-a-half year old, and Ms. Sulochana, who married Kumar three months back, were inconsolable when they saw the accident site.
