DAVANGERE: The police have arrested two persons who allegedly claimed to be reporters of a Kannada weekly and tried to blackmail an inspector of the Regional Transport Office here.

Superintendent of Police Sonia Sarang in a press release issued here on Thursday said Mahantesh allegedly telephoned RTO inspector Parameshwar on Wednesday claiming he was a reporter of a Kannada weekly and had information about the "wealth amassed by the inspector".

He allegedly demanded Rs. 20,000 from Mr. Parameshwar to ensure this information did not appear in the media. Mr. Parameshwar told the police about the incident, who told him to tell the caller that he would pay the money.

Mr. Parameshwar asked the caller to come to the RTO's office at 8 p.m. Police arrested two men, Shanmukappa and Channamallikarjun, who accepted the "fake currency notes".

The editor of a local daily allegedly telephoned Mr. Parameshwar asking him to pay the money .

Chennamallikarjuna and Shanmukhappa had been arrested, Ms. Sarang said.
