HUBLI: The Hubli police have arrested two persons for attempting to sell a girl to a man on the pretext of marriage.

Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told presspersons here on Tuesday that based on a complaint by Ramappa N. Kurubar of Chalamatti village in Kalaghatagi taluk of Dharwad district, the police launched an investigation and rescued the girl.

He gave the names of the arrested as Mohan Premchand Basti and Suresh B. Hanchinmani of Hubli.

He said that the accused had promised Ramappa that they would help his daughter to get married to Jitendra P. Sahuji of Jala in Maharashtra. Subsequently, they took the girl away without the consent of her parents.

The Commissioner said that the accused admitted that they had taken Rs. 1 lakh from Jitendra for arranging his wedding with the girl.

Efforts were on to trace Jitendra, the Commissioner said.
