With Tungabhadra river, which is in spate following heavy discharge from the reservoir at Hospet, flowing over the bridge, the main link between Bellary and Koppal districts, was cut off on Sunday.

Movement of vehicles on the bridge came to a standstill on Saturday, following a ban imposed by the authorities.

The discharge from Tungabhadra reservoir was at the rate of 1.29 lakh cusecs on Sunday and the inflow 1.22 lakh cusecs.

Without any mode of transport, people, including women, had to wade through the ankle to knee-deep water flowing on the bridge to move from one end to the other.

The bridge would be out of sight, if the discharge from the reservoir were to reach 1.5 lakh cusecs.

The historical monuments and mantapas at Hampi on the bank of the river continued to be flooded.

There are no reports of any kind of loss to private and public properties so far.
