Mass marriage attracts many people

Police had earmarked places for parking

Trouble began after the marriage function got over

HUBLI: The mass marriage at Kalghatgi in Dharwad district on Friday threw traffic out of gear for more than two hours on the Hubli-Karwar Road.

As a large number of people turned up for the mass marriage, vehicular movement had slowed down at Dharwad Cross near Kalghatgi in the morning.

The Police Department had earmarked places for parking of vehicles and there was adequate parking space available for them. However, trouble began after the rituals of the mass marriage got over and the guests started leaving the venue.

As the some guests approached the helipads temporarily constructed for the function, many people went towards the helipad to see the helicopter taking off. Consequently, there was not much space for the vehicles to move forward.

Once the helicopter took off, some people started moving towards the food counters and those who had finished their lunch started returning to the places where they had parked their vehicles.

The problem worsened when people started returning to their native places in their vehicles.

With each vehicle driver trying to be the first to reach the main road, there was chaos.

The police personnel deployed at the venue found it difficult to streamline the vehicular movement.

Ultimately, they had to stop vehicles coming from the Hubli side to allow free passage for the vehicles going towards Hubli.

However, the vehicles moved at a snail’s pace and it took nearly two hours for the police to clear the traffic jam.
