The Tobacco Board has conceded the demand by local farmers for an additional regional office at Periyapatna.

This was disclosed by board chairman Kamala Vardhan Rao, who interacted with tobacco farmers and elected representatives here on Thursday. This was Mr. Rao's first visit to the district after taking over as chairman recently.

He said that the new regional office would benefit nearly 15,000 farmers in Periyapatna.

He said the office would be inaugurated soon and an officer had already taken charge as Regional Officer.

A.H. Vishwanath, MP, said that the chairman had apprised himself of the problems plaguing tobacco farmers in the region and hoped that solutions would be forthcoming by way of better procurement rates.

He also stressed the need for better facilities for tobacco farmers and called for e-auction of tobacco.
