Boulder-pulling competition for bullocks is the main attraction

Raichur: A three-day cultural festival to mark the celebration of "Karahunnime" on the eve of the kharif season began here on Sunday. Munnurkapu Raitha Samaja and the Kannada and Culture Department jointly organised the festival.

Inaugurating the traditional boulder-pulling competition for bullocks at the Rajendra Gunj Yard as part of the festival, district in-charge Minister Alkod Hanumanthappa said that the cultural festival was being held here every year to encourage rural sports.

Raichur MLA A. Papa Reddy, who presided, said that the boulder-pulling competition for bullocks was the main attraction of the three-day festival where farmers from north Karnataka and the neighbouring districts of Andhra Pradesh took part.

Eight pairs of bullocks participated in the first day of the competition to pull two-tonne boulder. The bullocks belonging to Adiveppa of Gokak taluk in Belgaum district secured the first prize and a cash award of Rs. 15,000 by pulling a boulder up to 4,800 ft in 20 minutes.

The bullocks belonging to Rayappa of Bagewadi taluk in Bijapur district and Bellam Hanumanthareddy of Raichur secured second and third prizes securing cash awards of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.
