DHARWAD: Three persons of a family, including two children, were killed on the spot and two were injured in a house collapse at Laxmisinganakeri here on Wednesday night.

The dead were identified as Hanumanth R. Belagavi (35) and his daughters Laxmi (6) and Ashwini (4).

Hanumanth Belagavi’s wife, Mahadevi (30), and his one-year-old son, Ramesh, were injured in the incident. They have been hospitalised.

According to the police, following incessant rain on Wednesday, a portion of a retaining wall built by the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation at Laxmisinganakeri fell on the house. The victims were asleep when the incident occurred. On hearing the noise, neighbours came to their rescue. The five persons were rushed to a hospital. However, only two of them survived. The injured were subsequently shifted to KIMS Hospital in Hubli.

On Thursday, Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain and other officials visited the site. He told the relatives of the victim that immediate steps would be taken to release compensation. Later, he met Ms. Mahadevi in KIMS Hospital and assured her of assistance to take up self-employment.

Mr. Jain announced compensation of Rs. 1 lakh for each of the dead.
