Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G. Parameshwara on Tuesday said the State election committee under him would accept applications from aspirants with criminal charges against them, for contesting the Assembly elections. However, the Central Election Committee of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) would be the ultimate decision-maker, which would consider the magnitude and seriousness of the crime.
Speaking to presspersons, Dr. Parameshwara said the criteria for issuing ticket were commitment to the Congress leadership and its ideology, and being a strong contender to win the election. He said the KPCC election committee would only inform the central committee, but would not decide on the criminal antecedents of the aspirants.
Asked whether ticket-seekers from other parties would be obliged, Dr. Parameshwara said that if they satisfy the criteria, such cases would be taken up for discussion with the local leaders before issuing ticket.
On the 15 questions posed to him by the Janata Dal (Secular) MLC Y.S.V. Datta on the Upper Krishna projects, he said the party’s commitment to completing irrigation projects could not be doubted.
