Three youths were washed away in the Cauvery at Hogenakkal in Dharmapuri district on Monday. In all eight of them had gone there.

The three who drowned were identified as G. Srinivasan (20), a former student of Acharya Polytechnic College; Thej Kumar Reddy (20), a final year B.Com student of Seshadripuram College; and Gnanesh (20), a first year engineering student of Sambhram Institute of Technology.

Manjunath E., a college student who was one of the eight students travelling with the three of them said that they had left Bangalore on Monday morning and reached Hogenakkal falls at around 1 p.m. “After watching the falls for more than an hour and a half, we left the place. But we wanted to get down in the water and play in the shallow part of the falls before heading back.”

According to Manjunath, Srinivasan first got down in the water to take a bath but slipped. While making an attempt to save him, Thej and Gnanesh also were washed away. “Since neither of the three knew how to swim, they drowned within a few minutes.”

Manjunath told The Hindu that none of the locals or the tourists offered to help them. He alleged that the people who had boats said that they would help only if the friends paid them some money. The police visited the spot, “But since it was dark, the police have told us that they would recover their bodies only on Tuesday,” he added.
