‘Some Congress MPs and MLAs are facing corruption charges’

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi has said that “there are some bad apples in the Congress party too” and expressed confidence that the party would win a majority in the Assembly polls in May and come to power in the State.

To a query on how he would justify the attack on the BJP government in Karnataka for corruption when the UPA government itself was facing several charges of corruption, scams and abuse of power, Mr. Singhvi said at a press conference here on Thursday: “No political party since independence has taken any legal action against its members for any misbehaviour.”  He added that the party would adopt zero tolerance policy towards corruption related issues. “There are some bad apples in our party too. Some Congress MPs and MLAs are facing charges of corruption”. However, he was not categorical on the question of issuing party ticket to leaders facing charges of corruption to contest Assembly elections.

Changing winds

On the question of admission of tainted leaders into the Congress, he said: “When the winds change, you have a lot of people seeking us. There are many bridegrooms running after the bride, but the bride will be the chooser ultimately.” “We never displayed lack of morality and lack of principle which you have been seeing from the day the BJP government assumed power in Karnataka.” He also hit out at the BJP government for its misrule, neglect of infrastructure and clinging on to power immorally with the support of the Karnataka Janata Paksha.

On the Jagadish Shettar government, Mr. Singhi remarked: “The BJP divorced the KJP but the two are in a live-in relationship”.
