One of the obvious sights for Bangaloreans during summer is the jackfruit. The traditional idea of consuming the fruit is to simply cut it into large chunks, separate the sweet, tender part from its flakes and collectively devour it. But gone are the days when eating jackfruit meant a cumbersome experience . Customers who recently attended the Halasina Habba in town were pleasantly surprised with the wide variety of items that were made using jackfruit as the main ingredient.
Jackfruit ‘manchurians’ to biscuits, soups, multigrain malt and bondas - several items were on display at the festival that was held at Green Basket, an organic shop in the city. The Habba was inaugurated by writer Sandhya Sharma.
Apart from being quite appealing to the mouth, jackfruit also comes with a lot of health benefits. Ramakrishnappa, Additional Director, Horticulture, Karnataka, said: “Jackfruit can be considered as a complete meal as it has adequate levels of potassium, carbohydrates and vitamin C.” Pramod Guttal, owner, Green Basket, said that food prepared with organic ingredients were not only healthy but could also be cooked in an innovative manner to make it tasty.
