The introduction of the Karnataka Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) only in English and Kannada has upset Urdu-medium students who are now demanding that the government frame the question paper in Urdu as well.
The State government has introduced TET for the first time this year as per the directions of the National Council for Teacher Education. Only those candidates who score 60 per cent in the TET qualify for the Common Entrance Test (CET) for recruitment as teachers in primary/high schools.
Urdu-medium students in the State are dismayed with the government decision They said it would be difficult for them to write the exam either in Kannada or English.
“Since most of our syllabus is in Urdu, it will be difficult for us to write the exam in English or Kannada. We may not get 60 per cent marks, in which case we will not qualify for the CET,” said Mudassir Rozindar, an aspirant.
Though he appreciated the introduction of the TET, which, according to the government is aimed at selecting only the best candidates for the posts of teacher, Mr. Rozindar said question papers should be made available in other languages also.
Several pro-Urdu organisations, including the Karnataka Muslim Council, have asked the government to introduce TET question paper in Urdu.
Speaking to The Hindu , Commissioner of Public Instruction Mohammed Mohsin admitted that there was demand to introduce the question paper in Urdu also.
“We have brought this matter to the notice of the Minister concerned. Only the government can take a decision on this,” he said. He said the department was ready to introduce the question paper in any Indian language if the government permits. Mr. Mohsin denied the allegation that the government had introduced the TET in haste.
The government has postponed the test from June 1 to June 15 in view of the large number of candidates who are applying for it. The last date for submission of applications is May 7.
