HDMC engineer Maralihalli was allegedly manhandled

There was tension in the Super Market area in Dharwad on Sunday following an altercation between Janata Dal (Secular) workers and the staff of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), who had gone there to clean up the place. JD (S) supporters allegedly tried to prevent the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation staff from taking up the cleaning work at the market.

Recently, the decision to clear the drains in the area and clean up the market was taken at a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office. However, when the HDMC staff, along with officials concerned, reached there, vendors allegedly raised objection and tried to prevent the HDMC staff from carrying on with their work.

There was a heated exchange of words between HDMC officials and the JD(S) workers, particularly Ismail Tamatgar, corporator Saroja Patil and N.H. Konreddy, who recently staged a protest fast demanding that the authorities should take steps to keep the market area clean. The situation worsened after vendors allegedly manhandled HDMC engineer Maralihalli. The JD(S) party workers remained mute spectators. Following this incident, the HDMC staff stopped work and went back.

It may be recalled here that JD (S) had launched an agitation seeking amenities at the Super Market and demanded immediate steps to set the things right there. Later, at a meeting held by Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain it was unanimously decided that steps should be taken to clean the market first and provide basic facilities like drinking water, electricity and toilets.
