MYSORE: Kannayyanahundi village in H.D. Kote taluk witnessed group clashes and stone-throwing in the past two days, against the backdrop of the gram panchayat elections to be held on May 12.
According to Circle Inspector, H.D. Kote C. Mallik, political rivalry between two groups resulted in clashes and stone-throwing in the village. Some miscreants tried to torch the house of the former GP president Jayamma early on Saturday, and the house of Veere Gowda, a candidate in the elections, was damaged on Thursday.
Mr. Mallik said that Ms. Jayamma had resigned in view of interference by Eere Gowda, a powerful leader in the village.
She and her husband Basavashetty are supporting Mr. Eere Gowda's rivals in the GP elections, he added.
Angered by the support extended by the couple, a group of miscreants tried to torch Ms. Jayamma's house by dousing gunny bags in kerosene and setting it on fire. However, neighbours who saw the fire doused it, he said.
In another incident, miscreants threw stones and damaged the house of Mr. Veere Gowda, he said.
In view of the tension in the village and the elections, the District Armed Reserve Police had been deployed there. The situation was under control, Mr. Mallik added.
