MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district police authorities taking cognisance of increasing acts of crime being committed by "outsiders" who stays as tenants or obtain vehicles on rent have introduced a tenant verification system.

In a press release, B. Dayananda, senior Superintendent of Police, has said that the department had taken note of increasing acts of crime and terrorism in various parts of the country. People who indulged in such acts often obtained houses and vehicles on rent and used it as a base or tool to carry out their acts. The department had requested the District Magistrate to issue orders under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code, he said. Stating that the District Magistrate and the Deputy Commissioner had issued orders to this effect, Mr. Dayananda said it would remain in force up to May 5, 2007. Accordingly, owners of houses and vehicles are now required to obtain details of people wanting to rent or buy a house or vehicle along with their photograph and inform the jurisdictional police station.
