Bangalore: A 31-year-old techie has been arrested by the HSR Layout police on the charges of harassing his wife, which eventually culminated in her suicide on Saturday.
The police said that Anupjyoti Khataniar, an employee of a reputed software firm, in Bangalore, has been booked under a case in respect to harassment and abetting suicide of his wife Metali Baruah, who hanged herself from the ceiling at her residence in HSR Layout. The case has been booked following a complaint by Metali’s brother Prashanta Baruah.
Police said that Metali was married to Anup on December 12, 2007, in Assam, and both shifted to Bangalore on December 23, 2007.
They were residing in HSR Layout since then. The police said that Metali had written a suicide note before ending her life.
Though she had written that no one was responsible for her death, the police have booked a case as Prashanta has accused his brother-in-law of harassing his sister which forced her to commit suicide.
Prashanta said that her sister was complaining about the harassment after they shifted to Bangalore last December.
He said Metali had complained about her husband for complicating the minor issues as well as physical and mental abuse. On Saturday morning she called and complained about Anup again, he added.
Prashanta said that he had consoled her saying that he would be coming to Bangalore to take her back to Assam. However, on Saturday night he said that he received a call saying that Metali had committed suicide. “The handwriting in the suicide note does not match with that of my sister. There is a difference in the hand writing,” Prashanta said.
The police, however, said that they would send the handwriting sample to the handwriting experts and depending on the report they would take further action against the accused.
