There is a demand for creation of 136 new taluks in the State
Belgaum: There is demand for creation of new taluks in the State is bound to make tough the job of the State’s Taluk Reorganisation Committee, which is looking into pros and cons of these demands before submitting its report.
Demands for creation of 136 new taluks have been placed before the committee. This is in addition to the existing 176 taluks.
However, the committee, headed by M.B. Prakash, is likely to submit its report to the Government by May this year.
This was disclosed by Mr. Prakash during an interaction with the media soon after a closed-door divisional-level meeting here on Thursday.
Two members of the committee, Chiranjeev Singh and H.K. Shivanna, were present.
Mr. Prakash said there was a demand from the people for the creation of 136 new taluks, including 57 in Belgaum division alone. Within the Belgaum division, consisting of seven taluks, the highest demand for creating 19 new taluks from out of the existing 10 taluks came from Belgaum district.
In respect of six other districts in the division, people have demanded the creation of six new taluks in Uttara Kannada, nine each in Bijapur and Haveri, five in Gadag, two in Dharwad and seven in Bagalkot
Interestingly, in the absence of any fixed criteria advised by the Government, the biggest challenge before the committee is to evolve its own criteria and yardstick to consider these demands on a rational basis as well as to ensure justice to at least the genuinely long-pending demands of the people in different districts.
To a question, Mr. Prakash said the one of the major objectives of the Government behind setting up the committee was to bring people closer to the administration and vice-versa.
Mr. Chiranjeev Singh said the committee would take an objective view of the issue and consider various aspects such as economic, trade-links, communication, geographical, historical, cultural and political before submitting its recommendations to the Government. The committee would also look into similar exercises carried out in other States.
Though there is a demand for 19 taluks in Belgaum district, the committee is learnt to have proposed only five new taluks, Kagawad from Athani taluk, Nippani from Chikkodi taluk, Mudalgi from Gokak taluk, Yargatti from Ramdurg taluk and Kittur from Khanapur taluk.
