Though metro commuters not exactly beating a path to the newly introduced bicycles on hire at the stations, a week after the cycles were introduced, the facilitators said there have been 25 registrations.

“Currently, we have the service at M.G. Road, Trinity Circle and Ulsoor metro stations. Registration is done at the M.G. Road station; the facility is also available online,” says Syed Haseeb, chairman and managing director, Kerberon Automation Pvt. Ltd.

In 2011, Kerberon Automobiles introduced automated tracking and control of Green Asset bicycle stands in different parts of the city, with Anil Kumble Circle and Utility Building complex being the main centres. What began as a pilot project received a decent response of over 300 people registering for the facility. The year-old pilot project cost Rs 3.5 crore. Asked about how the company plans to recover its investment, chief operating officer Srinivas Ramesh said: “We don’t want to burden our users and intend to recover the amount through advertisements.”

How to go about it

A passenger who wants to use the bicycle can register at the M.G. Road Station by paying a refundable amount of Rs. 1,000 to get a membership card which also doubles as a smart card which deducts the charge.

It is mandatory to have a minimum balance amount of Rs. 250 for any kind of payment. Recharge is done in denominations of Rs. 250, Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000.

“We have docking stations at Anil Kumble Circle, Bible Society, Brigade-Residency Road junction and Utility Building, where riders can plug back the cycles to the dock after their use. Their bill will give details about the rider’s travel time, the destination visited and the amount paid,” Mr. Haseeb explained. Riders need not return to the same docking station to turn in the cycle, he added.

Other stations too

“We will next introduce docking stations at the Swami Vivekananda Road, C.M.H. Road and Byappanahalli metro stations,” said Mr. Ramesh.

To help long distance riders, the company plans to set up docking stations every 500 metres from the metro stations.
