A person tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire in front of the Upper Tunga Project Chief Engineer's office here on Saturday to protest against the delay in payment of compensation to the farmers of Hirekerur taluk of Haveri district who lost their land for the project. The person who sustained 30 per cent burn injuries was immediately shifted to the Mcgann Hospital. Farmers, who were involved in a discussion with the authorities concerned over their problem, went berserk when they came to know about the suicide attempt by one of the protesters identified as Chandrasekhar Bannikod, son of the president of the Haveri district Janata Dal (Secular) unit Basappa Bannikod. They smashed the window panes and ransacked the office causing an extensive damage to the furniture.
