Members of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) on Thursday staged a protest against “indiscriminate acquisition of farmers' lands and later denotifying the lands to enable ruling party politicians to grab them”.
The members, led by secretary of the district unit of the SUCI H.V. Diwakar, came in a procession to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk and later burnt an effigy depicting the corruption in the BJP Government in the State.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Diwakar alleged that farmers' lands were acquired by government agencies for different purposes at throwaway prices, and later denotified so that politicians could grab them at rates lower than the market rate. The State Government should suspend the process of acquisition of farmers' land in the name of development. The lands, which have already been acquired, should be denotified and handed over to the farmers from whom it was acquired, he said.
