BANGALORE: Legislative Council Chairman Veeranna Mathikatti directed the State Government to constitute a committee comprising ministers concerned, Opposition leaders and officials to take up a comprehensive study on the nature of mineral policy and the carrying capacity of districts such as Bellary which had iron ore deposits. Earlier, Congress member K.C. Kondaiah expressed concern that Bellary did not have infrastructure support to handle a large number of steel plants which were being set up in the district. While the State Government recently cleared a proposal by Acrelor Mittal to set up a steel plant in Bellary, seven other plants had been set up. While the district was getting crowded with such mega industries, the mineral wealth in Bellary was expected to suffice only for about 20 years. Besides, there was a huge demand for water and conflict between agriculture and industries. He demanded that a study on carrying capacity of Bellary as well as the mineral wealth and infrastructure requirements should be conducted before allowing new steel plants.
