Students of V.V.S.B.M. Sri Educational Institutions, Kuvempunagar, enacted a play titled “Soil — our food provider” on the school premises here recently to spread awareness on the importance of soil conservation. The play was part of the project “Tale of a brick”, which will be presented at the National Children's Science Congress. The students extensively studied soil depletion caused by brick-making as part of their project, according to the information available from the school.

They have put forth alternatives to avoid the use of agricultural topsoil for making bricks. The alternative material include cement bricks, inter-locking cement bricks, and bricks made of soil dug out while laying building foundations. The bricks made from these material need not be burnt. Therefore, they neither pollute air nor cause deforestation, according to the study.
