The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest on Monday against the government’s decision to grant licence to 17 new private universities in the State. NSUI functionary Vishwanath P. said: “Giving licence to new private universities will affect the education system in the State. There are many government-run universities in the State and I don’t understand the need for new private universities here. The government has failed to give quality education at these universities. [People from] weaker sections of society, who are studying in government colleges, are affected due to commercialisation of education.”
