Stage protest in front of KSRTC depot at Harapanahalli
School and college students staged a demonstration in front of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus depot at Harapanahalli on Thursday demanding bus services to all villages from Harapanahalli.
Senior officials of the KSRTC, including Mohammed, Divisional Controller of Davangere, rushed to the spot and spoke to the protesters.
The students said that the KSRTC was not operating services to many villages despite repeated requests. At least 100 students from different villages had to travel to Harapanahalli every day. Although KSRTC officials had promised to run buses to all villages on several occasions, they had not done it so far. As a result, several students had to travel by tractors and bullock carts to Harapanahalli. Many students were missing classes.
The protesters alleged that a few buses running to a couple of villages were not maintaining their schedules, which was resulting in students missing classes.
Holalu, Hyarada, Kotturu, Niluvanji, Pruthveshwar, Kyarekatte, Arsikere and many other villages did not have KSRTC bus facility, they said.
Stating that more than eight students from different villages had secured ranks in SSLC and PUC in the last few years, they said a majority of them belonged to poor families and could not afford to stay in Harapnahalli or elsewhere to continue their studies.
The protesters warned the KSRTC officials that they would intensify their agitation if buses were not introduced immediately.
The KSRTC officials assured the students that more buses would be arranged from Davangere and operated to the villages soon. They said divers would be instructed to strictly maintain the schedules.
