G. Lokesh and A.B. Shivakumar of Honnali in Davanagere district have bagged the first prize in the State-level science model exhibition held under the aegis of the Karnataka Balavikas Academy (KBA) at Dharwad Regional Science Centre on Tuesday.
Samprit Nadig and Darshan of Shimoga district emerged runners-up. The third prize went to Surabhi from Noolvi village of Dharwad district.
While the first prize winners were given a cash prize of Rs. 5,000, the runners-up received cash prizes of Rs 3,000. The third prize winner got a cash prize of Rs. 1,000.
All the participants received certificates. Teachers, who assisted the students to develop models for the exhibition, were awarded fellowships. A total of 32 science models were displayed at the exhibition.
S.P. Hiremath, the former vice-chancellor of Kuvempu University, gave away the prizes.
He said that young scientists should aim at winning the Nobel Prize and that such exhibitions helped children develop their observation power and explanation skills.
Mr. Hiremath said the focus in scientific research had changed to bio-medical engineering, computer science and nanotechnology in the 21st century.
India too had achieved strides in the field of science post Independence and today was one among four nations to have sent space vehicles to Mars, he added.
