The University Grants Commission (UGC) will upload bio-data of students in universities and colleges on its website shortly. This is to keep all information about each student ready as one among three measures initiated by the UGC to check ragging, its Chairman Sukhdeo Thorat said on Saturday.
Mr. Thorat told presspersons at Mangalagangotri, Mangalore University, that the UGC takes ragging in education institutes seriously. The bio-data will be uploaded in a week, he said.
On the advice of the Supreme Court, the UGC has initiated three steps to check ragging. As a first step, it set up a call centre a year ago. “Anybody can call the centre and register their complaints,” he said.
Secondly, an agency will monitor ragging in education institutes shortly. The remaining two measures will be made operational in a month, he added.
In reply to a query, he said that the UGC has identified some universities which could be probably declared as universities with potential for excellence.
