GULBARGA: Work in all branches of nationalised public sector banks in the district came to a standstill with the bank staff going on strike on Wednesday in protest the proposed merger of State Bank of Indore with State Bank of India (SBI).
The strike call was given by the All-India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), the All-India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) and the Gulbarga District Bank Employees’ Association demanding that the Government and the managements of the banks not violate commitments made before the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner at the time of the staff withdrawing the all-India strike on July 6 this year.
As per the minutes signed by the representatives of the management of the banks and the staff before the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner, the managements were advised not to pursue the issue of merger with the Reserve Bank of India and Government in the meantime.
Other points mutually agreed on before the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner were that the representatives of the SBI and State Bank of Indore agreed to invited the union and associations for discussions on the issue of merger to find an acceptable solution.
Charging the managements with violating this agreement, the striking staff said that the Government and the bank managements were now going ahead with the merger.
