Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation yet to release Rs. 30 lakhs grant

HUBLI: Hundreds of members of Stree Shakti self-help groups (SHG) took out a protest march here on Saturday and staged a demonstration in support of their demands.

The protest march was taken out from the Ambedkar statue near the Head Post Office to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation office. After reaching the corporation premises, the women staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Corporation Commissioner demanding the release of revolving fund earmarked for the SHGs.

Former Mayor Anilkumar Patil, who led the protest march, urged the Commissioner and the Mayor to release Rs. 30 lakhs grant, which has been earmarked for the purpose in the budget of 2005-06. He urged the Government to release matching grant. Mr. Patil said the SHGs should be involved in solid waste management. T ax collection and maintenance of community toilets should be entrusted with SHGs. The fund earmarked for the SHGs in the corporation should be increased to Rs. 50 lakhs, he said.

The former Mayor Prakash Kayarakatti, councillors Yamanur Gudihal, Mohan Asundi, M.S. Patil, Lokur, and Altaf Kittur took part in the demonstration. A memorandum was submitted to the Mayor and the Commissioner of the Corporation. A memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister seeking release of matching grant was submitted to the Hubli Tahsildar.
