MYSORE: A city based steel trader was robbed of Rs. 5 lakh near the Old Taluk Office here on Thursday night.

According to the police, Ramesh Kumar, owner of a steel trading firm, was returning home on a motorcycle with his assistant Narayan Singh in the pillion. He was carrying a bag containing Rs. 5 lakh, the day’s collection.

Four persons waylaid them near the Old Taluk Office, snatched the bag and fled in the cover of darkness, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Rajendra Prasad told The Hindu that the robbers assaulted the pillion rider before snatching the bag. Both Mr. Ramesh Kumar and Mr. Narayan Singh sustained injuries when they fell off the two-wheeler following the robbery.

Mr. Prasad said the robbers were aware that Mr. Ramesh Kumar was carrying cash with him. “They might have kept a watch on him and his business before striking,” he said.

The police have formed a team to arrest the accused.
