Dharna outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha to continue

Angered by the suicide of farmer Vittal Bhimappa Arabhavi, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene president Kodihalli Chandrashekar has called for a Statewide agitation from Thursday.

The dharna outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha here will continue. Farmers’ organisations would organise rasta roko and picket offices of deputy commissioners and tahsildars across the State in protest.

Mr. Chandrashekar said the government had failed to protect the farmer’s life.

The former Chief Minister and KJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa, who has been on dharna since the first day of the winter session demanding the government extend Shaadi Bhagya scheme to all communities, said he was fighting for the cause of farmers on the floor of the Assembly. He said he would join the farmers’ struggle and support them till their demands were met.

Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy, who rushed to the protest site soon after the Assembly was adjourned, said the Congress government was unwilling to look into the plight of farmers.

As news of the suicide spread, farmers from Raibag and other parts of the district rushed to Belgaum. However, the police prevented them and forced them to return. The entire village of Kankanwadi turned up to pay respects to the deceased farmer.

A large number of armed police have been deployed around the venue of the farmers’ agitation, where a tense situation has prevailed since the suicide.
