Chairman of the Karnataka Banjara Development Board Basavaraj Naik said on Sunday that the State Government had granted Rs. 115 crore to the board for the welfare of the Lambani community.

Inaugurating the “Lambani Samskriti Utsava” here, he said that the Board was carrying out development of infrastructure and residential hostels in the Lambani tandas of the State.

Mr. Naik said that education was the key to the growth of the community. “Only through education, can we ensure a better future for our children and find places in important positions in society,” he said.

G. H. Tippareddy, MLC, said that lack of education was keeping the community backward.

He said that the community could seek their rights from the Government only if they “shed their differences” and came together.

He said the city had four sites belonging to the community.

“It is regrettable that these sites are no longer in the community's possession. If you can get back your properties, you will obtain a substantial amount of revenue which can be used for the development of the community,” he said.

Shivamurthy Murughaswamy of the Murugharajendra Math said that globalisation had been putting enormous challenges before communities such as the Lambanis to protect and preserve their culture.
