N. Suryanarayan Reddy, president of the district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), on Tuesday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party Government for not addressing the problems of paddy growers.

Addressing presspersons here, he said that the Government had announced a minimum support price of Rs. 1,000 a quintal for paddy, compared to the market price of around Rs. 850. However, it had not yet started procurement. Farmers, who had to repay their debts, were in a dilemma as to whether they should wait for the procurement to start or sell the produce in the market to meet their immediate financial requirements.

Mr. Reddy urged the Government to immediately start the procurement process in all the paddy-growing areas, including Bellary, Koppal and Raichur districts.

“If the Government fails to respond, our party will take out a protest rally on June 1 in Bellary. In the event of further delay, party workers will stage a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here. The agitation will spread to the entire Hyderabad Karnataka region,” he said.
