A group of Congress party workers, led by Mahalakshmipuram MLA N.L Narendra Babu, staged a protest at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Dr. Rajkumar Indoor Stadium at Nagapura Ward, here on Thursday.

The protesters raised slogans to express their disappointment with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and State Government for not inviting Dr. Rajkumar's family to the function, considering the stadium was named after the late actor. Mr. Babu said those who were responsible for the land acquisition were also ignored by the BBMP.

Malleswaram MLA Ashwath Narayan, Mayor S.K. Nataraj, and ruling party leader B.S. Sathyanarayana intervened and pacified the protesters. Nagapura ward councillor S. Harish said the Rs. 5-crore stadium, coming up on over an acre of land, would be completed in 18 months. “The stadium will have a badminton court, a gymnasium, jogging track, an auditorium and a separate children's play area.”

In the midst of all the chaos, schoolchildren participated in the cultural programmes.

Deputy Mayor N. Dayanand, Leader of Opposition in BBMP Council M. Nagaraj, and councillors were among those present.
