GULBARGA: The Chief Whip in the Legislative Council Vittal Heroor, who is also president of the Nijasharana Ambigara Chowdayya Jayantotsava Samiti, on Saturday demanded that the State Government persuade the Union Government to accept one of the long-pending demands for including the Kabbaliga caste in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.

Mr. Heroor told presspersons that this demand would be reiterated during the inauguration of the Nijasharana Ambigara Chowdayya Jayantotsava by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Gulbarga on April 27.

Thanking the Chief Minister for his gesture to release Rs. 50 lakhs for the establishment of the Ambigara Chowdayya Research Chair in Gulbarga University, Mr. Heroor said that originally the proposal was sanctioned when Mr. Dharam Singh was the Chief Minister, but the then Government, after sanctioning the proposal, had not released the money to Gulbarga University to start work.

He said Ambigara Chowdayya was a contemporary of Basaveshwara, but he had not been recognised for his contribution. The Government should publish the vachanas of Ambigar Chowdayya and sell the works at an affordable price to popularise them, he added.
