The Union Government has approved revision in the list of Scheduled Tribes in Karnataka and introduction of a Bill in Parliament for effecting the proposed insertion. This decision will fulfil a long-pending demand of Medara community for granting Scheduled Tribes status to it in the State. The Union Cabinet announced the decision on Tuesday last. Those belonging to the community will be eligible to get Scheduled Tribes certificate in Karnataka and also for benefits enshrined in the Constitution for Scheduled Tribes, after amendment. The verification of social status and issuance of Scheduled Tribes certificates rests with the State Government.
