Mazdoor sangh to lead hawkers’ dharna today
K. Vijayakumar, district secretary of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, has said that he will lead a dharna of hawkers and roadside vendors on Wednesday in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and request him to allow the vendors to carry on with their business.
Speaking to presspersons on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayakumar said that about 1,000 of the nearly 2,000 roadside vendors had submitted applications, as desired by the Deputy Commissioner, agreeing to abide by the conditions laid down by the authorities. “Our demand is that at least those who have submitted their applications be permitted to conduct business,” he said. To a question, Mr. Vijayakumar said that B. Sriramulu, MLA and president of the BSR Congress, came on his own to Gandhi Bhavan on March 21 where the roadside vendors had gathered to decide on the next course of action after they were evicted by the authorities, and staged a dharna the next day along with his supporters.
“None of us had invited him. He had come on his own and tried to hijack the movement,” he said.
To another question, Mr. Vijayakumar said that the 24-hour dharna staged by Mr. Sriramulu and his arrest later on had not affected the movement. “We have faith in the Deputy Commissioner, who has promised to rehabilitate the vendors. We hope that he will initiate steps to complete the process of giving permission to roadside vendors expeditiously,” he said.
The civic authorities have launched a drive to remove encroachments on the Bangalore road.
