Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary G.V. Srirama Reddy on Thursday met journalist Naveen Soorinje, who has been lodged in the Mangalore District Prison. Mr. Soorinje, a reporter from Kasturi Newz 24, was on November 7 in connection with the July 28 homestay attack case.

In his brief interaction with Mr. Soorinje, Mr. Reddy said a committee of like-minded people was being formed to provide support to journalists, including Mr. Soorinje, who have been victimised by the police and government agencies. The committee would not be associated with his party, he said.

Mr. Reddy inquired Mr. Soorinje about the safety inside the prison. Mr. Soorinje told Mr. Reddy that he was staying in a cell that was different from the one where the other accused in the homestay attack case have been lodged.

Mr. Soorinje who was instrumental showing the nation the shocking attack on men and women attending a birthday party at a homestay, has been charge sheeted on September 25 along with 43 others, and another journalist Sharan. Mr. Soorinje and Mr. Sharan have been charged with abetting offences, namely dacoity, outraging modesty of women allegedly committed by persons who have attacked the partygoers.

Mr. Soorinje was arrested on November 7.

He is among the 29 persons arrested so far. The police are yet to execute the non-bailable warrants issued against 15 persons.
