Goverment will distribute tablet computers among farmers: S.R. Patil

“The State government will organise an investors’ conference in Hubli on September 26, to attract investments in IT and related industries in Tier II cities,” S.R. Patil, Minister for Information Technology, said here on Sunday.

Hundreds of investors have agreed to participate, the Minister added.

He was addressing presspersons during a function to felicitate meritorious students at the Sarvajnya School here.

“Spreading the IT revolution to Tier II cities such as Mangalore, Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad and Gulbarga is a priority for the State government. We will do all that we can,” the Minister said.

Assured benefits

“We will implement a road map prepared by a committee headed by T.V. Mohandas Pai, former board member of Infosys, for the spread of IT to towns and cities,” the Minister said.

Several companies such as Infosys have already set up campuses in Mangalore and Mysore. Infosys has also announced its plans to set up a campus in Hubli-Dharwad. We have assured them of land and other benefits,” the Minister said.

Bangalore meet

Union Minister for Communication Kapil Sibal will inaugurate an investors’ meet in Bangalore, on September 22 and 23.

This will promote the IT and communication technology sector, Mr. Patil said.

Keeping them updated

“The State government will start a programme of beaming agriculture-related information to farmers through tablet computers. In association with the Union government, we will distribute tablets to farmers and keep them regularly updated on advanced farming techniques, new crop varieties and market intelligence.”

The pilot project on distribution of tablet computers will start from Bagalkot district, the Minister said (Mr. Patil hails from Bagalkot district).

To a question, he said meetings of heads and members of all area development boards will be held soon.

“We have already reviewed the progress of some boards. We will ensure all boards start working and get enough funds,” he said.
