SHIMOGA: The Government has failed in bringing succour to those affected by the recent rain and floods in the State, Shimoga MP and State Samajawadi Party President S. Bangarappa has said.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that the floods caused by the Tunga, Bhadra and Varada had led to extensive damage to standing crops, houses and infrastructure in Shimoga district. But the Government had not risen to the expectations of the people in flood-affected areas.

“What has been extended by the Government as compensation is inadequate compared to the extent of loss,” he said.

Mr. Bangarappa said that it was ridiculous that only Rs. 300 had been paid as compensation to a person whose house had been damaged in the floods.

Mr. Bangarappa said that the compensation paid to the people in the taluks of Shimoga, Bhadravati, Tirthahalli, Sagara, Shikaripur, Sorab and Hosnagar was around Rs. 35 lakh each while the exact loss was far more than what had been given. Mr. Bangarappa urged the Government to expedite flood relief measures.

Mr. Bangarappa said that transfer of power to the BJP was unlikely going by the remark made by Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda that there was none in the BJP who was competent enough to occupy the Chief Minister’s post.

Mid-term elections would become inevitable after October 3, , Mr. Bangarappa said.
