“Efforts to develop Telangana by giving it special status under Article 371 have failed. That explains the movement for a separate Telangana,” said N. Narasimha Reddy, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) politburo member here on Thursday.
He was speaking at a programme to felicitate leaders of the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti and others who took part in the agitation. Mr. Reddy said that though Telangana was given special status 40 years ago, schemes for its development had not been implemented properly.
“A similar fate may befall Hyderabad Karnataka. This region may witness a movement for the creation of a separate State if the Union and State governments do not implement the provisions of Article 371 properly,” he said. He urged samiti members to be vigilant about the moves of the State government and make sure that it implemented the amendment in letter and spirit.
“Any indifference shown in this regard will only lead to the psychological alienation of the region from the State,” he said.
“The Constitution has been amended to ensure that this backward region gets its due. The amendment is also expected to soothe the feelings of people in this region who have felt betrayed by successive governments. If the objectives behind the amendment are not met and the region does not develop quickly, a movement for the creation of a separate Hyderabad Karnataka will automatically take shape,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the dream of a separate Telangana would materialise soon.
“The Union government has no option but to allow the creation of smaller States. Smaller States will ensure effective governance and equal development of all regions,” he said.
Rajeshwar Rao, TRS leader, urged the samiti leaders to demand a separate budget for the HK region.
“Don’t think that your job is done with Parliament passing the amendment Bill. Your actual work starts now. You have to create awareness among the people about the benefits they get. You have to lobby with the State government to pass the Acts that will give the locals reservation in education and jobs,” he said said.
