The Legislative Council resounded with comments on the police lathi-charge against the protesters outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday. Cutting across party lines, the Opposition and the BJP members condemned the police action and demanded implementation of the A.J. Sadashiva Commission’s recommendations, which was the reason for the protest. They also demanded withdrawal of cases against the protesters.

In his reply, Home Minister R. Ashok said that as many as 17 persons and 19 policemen, including Belgaum Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil, were injured in the violence that erupted between members of the Madiga Meesalathi Horata Samiti (MMHS) and the police.

Defending the police action, Mr. Ashok said though permission was granted for a peaceful protest, the protesters broke the barricade of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha where the session was in progress.

His offer to receive a memorandum was turned down by the protesters.

However, members of the Opposition and the BJP, including Leader of Opposition S.R. Patil, floor leader M.C. Nanaiah, Doddrange Gowda, D.S. Veeraiah, K.B. Shanappa of the BJP, and R.V. Venkatesh of the Congress strongly condemned the lathi-charge.
