CHITRADURGA: The Karnataka State Slum Dwellers Welfare Joint Action Committee will organise a "Vidhana Soudha Chalo" rally on February 24 to highlight their demands, including for the constitution of a separate ministry for the development of slums.

Committee convener Y.J. Rajendra told presspersons here on Thursday that the Slum Clearance Board, which had been set up for the welfare of slum dwellers, had failed to meet its purpose.

"The committee is nothing but a puppet in the hands of the Government," he said.

He accused the State Government of failing to meet the needs of slum dwellers, who comprised 33 per cent of the population in the urban areas of the State.

"This considerable majority needs the Government's attention so that they can lead decent lives," he said.
