A gang of thieves from Tamil Nadu who wanted to steal details of ATM cards using a skimmer were caught when they tried to rope in an associate in Bangalore.

The plan

The gang of six approached a jeweller in the city and told him their plan. They told him that they wanted to attach a skimmer to the card swipe machine. When a customer paid for a purchase with either debit or credit card, the skimmer would automatically capture their data. Using this, they planned to make duplicate cards. They offered a share of the loot to the jeweller.

The shop owner alerted the police.

A police team from Girinagar arrested K. Thirumurugan (38), S. Raja Mohammed (29), Shanmugam (32), V. Kaliswaram (49), Shankar (30), and Suneel (40), and recovered an Innova, two laptops and a skimming machine.

The accused told the police that they had bought the skimming machine from Mumbai.

“We are investigating their claim that this was their first attempt at crime,” a source in the police said.
