GULBARGA: Reiterating its opposition to the draft Karnataka Housing and Habitat Policy 2009, circulated by the State Government for comments from the public and various organisations, the Gulbarga District Slum Dwellers Federation has started a signature campaign against it.

Convener of the federation Allamprabhu Nimbarga and treasurer Sanjeevkumar Kamble told presspersons here on Thursday that the draft policy would take away all rights of slum-dwellers as it calls for clearing of all unrecognised slums without providing an alternative housing facility.

Mr. Nimbarga said that on February 1, the federation along with various associations of slum-dwellers organised protests throughout the State and submitted objections to the Government on clauses pertaining to slums in the draft policy. So far, over 5,000 objections had been filed against the draft policy. He said that on March 15, the federation would submit signatures obtained from slum-dwellers in Gulbarga district and other parts of the State to the Secretary, Urban Development, and urge the Government to give up the policy.
