In a strategic move to counter the influence of the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday forwarded the name of veteran leader B.B. Shivappa to Governor H.R. Bhardwaj for nominating as member of the Legislative Council. A nominated member’s seat is vacant in the Upper House following the recent resignation by Vijay Sankeshwar. It is learnt that the BJP chose the 83-year-old leader hailing from Lingayat community — who is regarded by senior party workers for nurturing the BJP organisation as its State president in its initial days — as part of its efforts to retain Lingayat vote base. It is also seen as an effort to connect with veteran party workers. — Special Correspondent
