Residents stage a protest in front of gram panchayat office

Residents of Shiravante staged a protest in front of the office of gram panchayat on Wednesday, demanding regular supply of drinking water.

Pipelines damaged

The area has not been getting drinking water for over a month now as the pipelines had been damaged during the road-widening work in the village. The gram panchayat was urged to repair the pipelines, but action had not been taken so far. As the other sources of water such as borewell and open wells had gone dry because of summer, Shiravante had been gripped by acute shortage of drinking water, the protesters said.

Protesters alleged that the people's representatives of the village had failed to take the initiative to ensure regular supply of drinking water. Women and children had to walk for long distances to fetch potable water, they said.

Assurance

The protest was withdrawn after gram panchayat president G.T. Ajjappa promised to address the problem at the earliest. Residents of Shiravante Jalajamma, Savitramma, Renuka, Ganapathi, Vasu, and Manjunath took part in the protest.
