A number of programmes will be held in the city on Wednesday to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Samanvaya, a nongovernmental organisation, along with the Department of Information, Kannada and Culture, has organised ‘Satyameva Jayate’ at Nehru Stadium. The programme will commence at 7.30 a.m.

Pontiff Vinayananda Saraswathi of Ramakrishna Ashram will speak on moral values in Bhagavad Gita, Rev. Fr. Yesu Rakshakanathan on Bible, Hafiz Rafi Ulla on Quran and Jagadish Kaur on Guru Granth Sahib.

Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal will release a book and CD on Mahatma Gandhi published by the Department of Information on the occasion.

Shimoga MLA K.B. Prasanna Kumar will attend the function. A fancy dress competition for children and a jatha will also be held to mark the occasion.

Gandhi Basappa and Haladamma Trust has organised a blood donation camp and a symposium at Kuvempu Rangamandir. The blood donation camp will be held from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon. The symposium will commence at 6 p.m.

Meena Deshapande, Professor at Bangalore University, will speak on Gandhian values.

Freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy will release a souvenir on Gandhi Basappa. Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Rathnakar, Bekkinakalmath pontiff Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra swami will take part in the programme.

Gandhi Jayanti will be observed under the aegis of Shimoga CMC and Kuvempu Centenary Shikshana Mahavidyalaya also.
