SHIMOGA: Kuvempu University has appointed Sheikh Ali, noted historian and former Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, as its nominee on the four-member search committee being constituted to recommend a panel of three candidates who will be considered during the appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor.
Disclosing this at a press conference here on Monday, out-going Vice-Chancellor K. Chidanand Gowda said a decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the university Syndicate. He said the Governor, who is the Chancellor of the university, the University Grants Commission and the State Government are yet to announce the names of their candidates.
Prof. Gowda's four-year term will end on Tuesday.
Reacting to the controversy over the nomination of persons with political background as members of the Syndicate, he said it is not enough if the Syndicate comprises only educationists or academicians. There is nothing wrong if politicians with a clean image try for membership to the academic bodies.
"We should admit that good people are there in politics too," he said
