HASSAN: Students of the Government First Grade Degree College led by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a dharna before the Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding that the Government release students’ scholarship money and refund development charges of Rs. 200 collected from students in government colleges.
The students took out a protest rally from the Government Science College to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, SFI district president M.G. Prithvi and secretary Vasudeva Kalkare alleged that the State Government had completely neglected students of arts and science and had given importance only to professional education. As a result, most government degree colleges in the district lacked basic facilities such as toilets, well-stocked libraries, playgrounds and sports equipment, they said and demanded facilities on a par with private degree colleges.
They demanded the return of Rs. 200 collected as development charges from the students as the money was not being used for the development of the colleges.
Mr. Kalkare said that according to the rules, students from the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes should be given scholarships by the Government. He alleged that deserving students who had applied three years ago had still not received their scholarships. Mr. Prithvi urged the Government to release these funds at the earliest.
